Today, March 10th, I had the privilege to visit the Good Samaritan Health & Wellness Center. As I walk the path toward representing our community in Washington, I believe it’s vital to see firsthand how our local families are being cared for, and let me tell you, the team at Good Samaritan is doing incredible work.
During my tour, I sat down with the leadership and staff to discuss the unique challenges we face in rural North Georgia. It’s one thing to read about healthcare policy in a briefing; it’s another thing entirely to walk the halls where that care is delivered.
Strengthening Our Rural Infrastructure with Good Samaritan Health & Wellness Center
We took a deep dive into the "lifelines" that keep centers like this running. For Good Samaritan to keep its doors open and its services affordable, federal programs aren't just line items as they are essentials. We discussed:
HRSA Funding: The foundational support that allows community health centers to expand their reach.
The 340B Drug Pricing Program: A critical tool that ensures our neighbors don't have to choose between putting food on the table and buying life-saving medication.
Without these resources, many in our community would simply go without care. Seeing the 340B in-house pharmacy in action and learning about Dragon Care—their school-based center at Pickens Junior High—reminded me that healthcare is about meeting people where they are.
Bringing Georgia’s Voice to Washington
I didn’t just go there to talk; I went there to listen. Strong local healthcare infrastructure is the backbone of a healthy, thriving district. My takeaway from today is clear: Washington needs to understand the reality of rural medicine.
"Hearing directly from our providers ensures that when I’m advocating for our district, I’m speaking from a place of truth and local necessity."
I want to extend a sincere thank you to the staff and leadership at Good Samaritan. Their dedication to the well-being of Pickens County is inspiring, and I am more committed than ever to ensuring they have the federal support they need to keep our families healthy.
